"Why would you book a shoot the day you move in to your new studio?" my wife asked. Excellent question babe and the truth is, we didn't. We had a Sr. Portrait re schedule and we really didn't have a choice. We always want to be as accomodating to our clients as humanly possible and today was just one of those days. The whole frshnk team came together to clean, paint and get the place ready and it was in working order when our senior arrived.
The one thing we didn't have? POWER!
When life gives you lemons you make lemonade and we ran extention cords into the park to power our strobes and the shoot went off without a hitch. Pat rocked this shoot and I am so proud of this kid it's not even funny!
I am excited to announce that I am working on my new book, which is currently unnamed, that will consist of a concept I call the 'shot blast'. In essence it's the same shot, and the same subject portraying a number of different emotions. Yes, basically we are just making funny faces, but we all need a good laugh sometimes and I am hoping this book will do that for people. If you are interested in sitting for me for this book I would really appreciate it. Give us a call at 215-0009 and set up a time. It will take about 10 minutes of your, but I promise there will be some laughing going on and we have good coffee too.
I finally managed to snag my Mom and sisters for a photo shoot! My other sister flew in from Jersey so everything came together just in time! The whole shoot was pretty goofy. Knowing my family, they didn't want to see any blemishes, wrinkles or any imperfections.... I had my work cut out for me in post processing! The series was shot mostly on white and underexposed to gray. It was a 30min shoot so we didn't have too much time to wonder around Downtown. Maybe next time!
I love digital and I love medium format. So which one is better?? Both have their uses and the argument between both have been going on since digital was created. The gap is closing in on medium format's advantage over digital as newer models are being released to the public. So let's have a look at both samples.
The first photo was taken with my Canon EOS 5D of our friend
Jef and his cat Sake. The settings are 1/200sec at f/6.3 ISO 100.

After the standard post processing (spot, color, white balance treatment and sharpening) this picture doesn't look too bad!
Now here is a medium format photo of Jef. The settings are
near identical with the 5D but the camera's film was ISO 160.

This medium format shot was basically scanned and resized for the web. I did a couple spot treatments and that's it. No white balance, color correction or even sharpening! It was plenty sharp! Maybe even too sharp as it depends on how you scan the film. I love how medium format captures such minute details and preserves the highlights!
The verdict. Each formats have their strengths. Digital easily has the upper hand in terms of flexibility in every field. It saves time, produces stunning photos and leaves me with files that allow me to edit them without doing too much damage. So far, the standard for newer DSLRs produce 12-14bit files which capture more detail and tones. For medium format, it depends on the film and the scanner. The higher end scanners can scan up to 48bit and higher which allows for far greater tonal range and detail but leaves you with files reaching hundreds to thousands of megabytes each!
The advantage over digital with medium format is greater tonal range which allows for evenly exposed shadows, highlights and better colors as it prevents clipping. White balance is more natural as well. Most of medium format's characteristics can be simulated in post processing nowadays except for the megapixels. Also, because of the size of medium format film, depth of field is much more shallow which creates a delicious 3D effect that takes hundreds of digital photos merged together to reproduce!
In the end, both formats are very similar and also very different. We will be offering medium format in February as an option. Who doesn't love the nostalgic, sharp detailed feel of film?! It's awesome. Enough nerding it up. Back to work!
The Irby family have a lot of style. They're in a band that totally rules (click here to get an ear feast) and they just bring a really awesome laid back vibe to any location they choose to grace with their Newbalance kicks. Dustin was lucky enough to shoot their wedding a few years back and now they have a beautiful new addition to the family so it was time for some new photo's. Foo grabbed his 5D and his eye for awesomeness and rocked this shoot out in like 20 minutes. It was unreal how quickly you can get great shots when your subjects are laid back and ready to party.
Dustin and I journeyed to WindMark beach to shoot the Coston family. The day was crisp and chilly with a nice warm tone. It was quiet a delicious day to be shooting outside! We also decided to mix things up by adding medium format to the photo adventure. The Mamiya didn't have an internal exposure meter but luckily, I had a handheld one in my man purse! I remember metering at ISO 100 even though the film was ISO 160 so let's hope the processed film and CD scans come in looking perty. Film has about 1-3 stops of tonal flexability so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. If it turns out to be a successful roll, we'll probably start adding in 120 film as an option. The advantages of medium format over digital are pretty noticeable. It's hard to reproduce the nostalgic look and 3D appearance of 120 film with digital files. Even with megapixels, when 120 film is scanned with a professional drum scanner, it can produce images over 100 megapixels! Dynamic range, sharpness, depth of field and image quality of medium format still trump digital. It may a different story when compared to the new Mamiya Leifs or Hasseblad HD's, but who can afford $14,000 - $30,000 cameras!?
Location, Location, Location .. it really is all about location. Thankfully we live in one of the most beautiful places in the country so wonderful locations are not hard to come by. It also helps when our subjects smilescan light up a room. We had a great time with the Stephens family and, like always, Lilly brought her cutest 2 teethed smile to the table. On a side note Brad (Lilly's dad) owns Sunjammers out on the west end of the beach. He can help you out with absolutely all of your fishing, kayak, and SUP needs. Check out his site at Sunjammers.com.
